The Japanese High Schools are very similar to the American ones and they have almost completely adopted the U.S. school system.

In Japan you have the choice between public and private schools but the space in the public schools tend to be restricted. As an exchange student you will enjoy special attention from your classmates and teacher and they will help you learn the language. In Japanese schools you spend the whole day with your class, school uniforms are compulsory as well as strict discipline. A school day last until approx. 15:00 and after that you have after school activities that you will also join together with the other students.

Japanese, Mathematics, Sociology, and Sports are compulsory subjects and subjects like Art, Music, Computer Science and Japanese Calligraphy are elective subjects. The Japanese name for High School is ”Kõtõgakkõ” and is attended by students who have completed the obligatory 9 years of primary school. The "Kõtõgakkõs“ are usually full-time schools that also offers profession oriented courses like Technology-, Trade- or Science classes beside the basic education.
